Hirsh Gardner – ‘My Brain Needs A Holiday’

The eternally, not to mention impressively, lion-maned drummer Hirsh Gardner should really need no introduction to fans of melodic rock. Born in Toronto, Canada and taking his early influences from the leg

endary drummer Gene Krupa added to British Invasion bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Animals, the great man attended the infamous Berklee College of Music and found himself in the early 70’s playing in a band with fellow Berklee student Steve Grimm, John Marcelli and Peter Stahl before the former opted to relocate to Milwaukee and formed Bad Boy with Marcel...

I would investigate Hirsh Gardner's latest solo effort, My Brain Needs A Holiday for the title alone. It does raise some curiosity. Gardner ascribes the title to the need to do another solo album after writing and producing songs for other artists for so many years. Another reason to listen to the album is his cover of Whiter Shade Of Pale, one of my favorite Procol Harum songs. It's not quite as good as Willie Nelson's cover, but Gardner does a fine job all the same.

But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. You're probably asking, who in the world is Hirsh Gardner? That was my first question, too. This i...

It's funny I was doing an interview a few years ago and telling a bunch of rock and roll on the road stories. The interviewer said to me, "you know Hirsh you sound like the Forrest Gump of rock and roll." It seems that the story that I was telling was a moment in Rock and Roll history that became either a turning point, an historical moment or just a brief encounter with some of my personal idols at a point in their career that was significant. His comment was hilarious to me as that week I had just watched the Forrest Gump movie with Tom Hanks for about the 4th or 5th time.

A few of my Forrest Gump stories.

A few of th...

And then of course there's the events with the John Cougar band as we toured throughout the Midwest with them. Cougar had a reputation as a real hothead. And as I understand it he was kicked off the Kiss tour just prior to joining up with New England. Obviously he knew that we were involved with Kiss because of our connection with Paul Stanley producing our first album and Bill Aucoin, who managed Kiss, also managed our band. To make a long story short they busted into our dressing room one night demanding to use our bathroom just after we had completed and extremely hot set. Cougar was incredibly obnoxious and prompted...

For his upcoming release, Hirsh Gardner signed with Escape Music a record label based in the UK. This partnership will bring Hirsh's sounds to the United Kingdom and far beyond.

When he’s not smashing it up on the drums with his band New England, one will find Hirsh producing, engineering and mixing at one of his studios in Boston. In the mid 2K’s Hirsh took a break from his productions, wrote, recorded and released his “Wasteland For Broken Hearts” CD. The album was released worldwide and was met with much critical acclaim.

Hirsh is back now with his second solo release “My Brain Needs A Holiday”. We asked Hirsh for a quick comment, “as you can tell from the title track I wanted this album to be fun but also rock a bit harder than my first release. I’m so honored to have as many guest artists o...
